WC Fleetwood FC fall short of ABCML glory

The Provincial Playoffs was once again unkind to Overberg where our representative team could not overcome the odds and proceed to the ABCML.

WC Fleetwood FC gave a very good account of themselves and drew their first match against SAFA Eden League Winners, Simunye FC 2 all.

They needed to beat Hanover Park FC, SAFA CT champions to progress to the Provincial League. Leading 1-0 they looked set for glory, but sadly let it slip and lost 2-1, allowing their opponents to progress at their expense.

Irrespective, the Region is proud of WC Fleetwood FC in their professional aproach and professional conduct, representing the Region with distinction.

WC Fleetwood FC are 2021/2022 Regional Champions

WC Fleetwood FC have done the double by also claiming the SAFA Overberg Regional Championship when they defeated Black Birds Soccer Academy 1-0 in Mt Pleasant Sports Grounds on Sunday 12 June 2022. A few weeks earlier they lifted the SODT Cup aswell.

Playing in difficult conditions where a gusting wind was blowing throughout the match, created extremely pressurised moments throughout the match. Whoever could master their nerves the ebst would be the overcomer, and Fleetwood showed their tenacity to claim the victory.

Their goal came in the first half when a vollwy from just inside the box made its way passed a host of bodies to find the back of the net. That was how it stayed till the end and a jubilant WC Fleetwood FC celebrated the final whistle.

With the Top 8 awaiting them in preparation for the upcoming Provincial Playoffs, we wish them all the ebst and know they will be successful at their challenge for an ABCML spot.

M-Academy took the lead early one with a good strike from Phallang Nkoesa to make it 1-0.

Shortly thereafter, a long range effort from almost the half way line, using the strong wind, perplexed the M-Academy keeper to misjudge the trajection of the ball. 1-1 as Blackpool FC equalised. ANd so it stayed for most of the match. woth about 5 minutes to go.

Blackpool counter attacked and sealed the victory with an excellent finish to make it 2-1. Not long after that, the referee blew the final whistle and Blackpool FC crowned Premiership Division Champions for 2021/2022.

With attacks coming thick and fast, Bryce Lenders equalised with a stunning shot from right to left which left the Salim backline perplexed. However, it brought the score line equal to 1-1.

After 4 days of solid competition, Lucky Girls FC and Ithemba Sporting FC came out on top in their respective competitions in the SAFA Overberg Easter Tournament of 2022.

On the first day, the teams arrived not really knowing what to expect. The Hawston Sports Grounds is a new venue within the playing venues of the clubs and they were unsire of what was awaiting them on playing surfaces. They were very excited to see well groomed and well kept playing fields for their talent to be revealed. That was especially true when it was announced that scouts from Supersport United, Mamelodi Sundowns, Ikapa Sporting, Cape Town Spurs and Cape Town City were going to attend.

The Opening Ceremony was moved back to 13:00 due to the overnight rains needing to pass and the venue to dry more. At that time the local counsillor, Mr Ronald Nutt assisted the Regional Executive Committee in handing over the entering teams match balls.

On the fields, the teams gave their all and no mercy was given as the high scores at times revealed that motivation on wanting to win the tournament.

The Saturday the bulk of the qualifying matches took place and great football was witnessed by those in attendance.

With the scouts roaming the fields and looking for the next big thing, they hung around the awesome displays by the Lucky Girls team from Botriver, scouting 7 in total for Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies FC.

Ithemba Sporting FC fall short of ABCML Glory

Although giving a very good account of themselves over the playoff weekend for ABCML places, Ithemba Sporting FC were unable to make the grade.

Drawing with Black Cats FC of Eden Region in their first match, gave them a reasonable start. However, later that day they fell short to Matroosfontein FC by 1-0. Knowing that only a solid win against Maties FC would throw them back into contention, they were unable to pull it through. Going down 1-0 again.

Needless to say, had our boys taken their chances, the outcomes would have been significantly different. However, chances must be taken to advance for higher honours.

In the end, we are very proud of the performances given by our team from Overberg. They pushed their opposition to play at their best.

RML Rd # 1 kicks of with goal fest

The first round of league matches in the RML league did not disappoint with close games, big gaol margins and plenty of drama and goals.

Zama Zama FC travelled to Kleinmond FC to face the development team of Police FC. Their 1st team recently promoted to ABCML, and allowing them to be promoted to RML. Knowing the history of last season between these two clubs (winners and runners up in 2019/2020) the tie could not have been spicier. And we were right.

From the outset, Zama Zama FC pressed their opposition who looked timid and intimidated intially, as they had to step up to a higher level and carry the high demand on their shoulders. An intial mistake by Police FC let Zama Zama in for the opening score and led 1-0.

That goal seemed to shake the Police FC team from their shackles and they started to launch attack after attack. It led to a penalty caused by defender Sibabalwe Magqweta who dived to stop the ball crossing the goals with his hand, stopping a definite goal in a goal mouth scramble. However, his bravery and sacrifice led to his red card dismissal by referee Makabogwe Pani. Mr Pani had a very good match in trying circumstances.

The penalty was scored to equalize the match and it stayed like that till half time.

All Covid regulations were adhered to by the Compliance Officers of both clubs.

The start of the second half saw Police FC push the advantage of their extra man and very quickly doubled their score with a header taken from an excellent corner set piece.

Police FC kept on pushing and Zama Zama tried their best to find their feet under this onslaught. As they tried, the Police FC striker Scara Tshabile put a third into the goal.

Being 3-1 up seemed to have a see-saw effect on the game. Police FC stepped off the pedal and Zama Zama FC stepped on theirs. Soon they put a second goal on the board with a breathless chip over the Police FC keeper.

Police FC then roared back with a screamer by centre back Sisa Ntshingana from outside the box, beating the diving keeper into the top right corner of the goal to make it 4-2.

Zama Zama FC refused to give up and drew another goal back to make it 4-3 in the end.

The fight in Overberg football is never over until the whistle blows. The tough encounter shows the resolve in our teams and that we never give up. Well done to Zama Zama FC and Police FC for showcasing our football spirit and talent.

Police FC make History

Police FC have made history when they qualified outright to the Provincial ABC Motsepe League when they won their group in the SAB playoffs held in Bredasdorp recently.

They beat Briton Stars FC from SAFA Central Karoo by 4-0, taking a 2 goal difference lead over Hanover Park FC from SAFA Cape Town into the next match. Hanover Park FC had beaten Briton Stars FC earlier by 2-0.

All Police FC needed was a draw or a win against Hanover Park FC to qualify for the ABC Motsepe League. Nervously, they conceded in the first half and were 1-0 down at half time. With a stern talk by coach Zakes Mlonyeni, they returned a different outfit. Scoring the equaliser 10 minutes later. They then held on to the final whistle and celebrated their success.

The whole of Overberg celebrated their achievement at the venue and on social media. With the support they received, they could not fail. We look forward to seeing more ABC Motsepe League football in the Overberg Region. We now have Gansbaai City FC (formerly Morning Stars FC from Gansbaai) and Police FC from Kleinmond.

What added to the team pushing beyond the limits of their mental abilities, was the promise they made to their deceased team mate, Sanele "Zulu" Mthembu that they would get to ABC for him, who so wanted that achievement. The boys did it for him.
